Sod Installation in the Treasure Valley
Nothing transforms a yard faster than fresh sod. Alive & Green installs sod for homeowners throughout Boise, Eagle, Garden City, Meridian and Kuna, giving you an instant, healthy lawn with proper ground prep, quality sod and clean installation that sets your lawn up for long-term health. Whether you’re finishing a bare backyard on a new build, replacing a tired lawn or restoring a spot where a tree or fence used to be, we’ll get it done right.
Builder Left Your Backyard Unfinished?
Bare backyards are extremely common on new construction homes in the Treasure Valley. Builders routinely install front yard sod as part of the home package but leave the backyard unfinished to keep costs down. If that’s your situation, sod is the fastest path to a usable backyard. A bare backyard is often the most straightforward starting point, since there’s nothing to remove, just soil preparation and installation. Wondering what it’ll take? See what affects the cost of sodding a new-home backyard.
Sod Replacement & Lawn Renovation
Got an older lawn you want to start over, or dead and patchy grass that’s beyond saving? We remove the existing lawn, weeds and debris, prep the soil and lay fresh sod. We also handle targeted repairs where a tree was removed, a fence came down or a play structure left a bare patch.
What’s Included in Every Sod Installation
- Ground prep: We cultivate and level your existing soil and remove weeds and debris, by hand on smaller projects and with a cultivator on larger lawns.
- Sprinkler check and adjustment: We test and adjust your sprinklers, set each head to the right depth for the new sod and set your timer for a new-sod watering schedule.
- Careful installation: We lay sod in a staggered, brick-like pattern and mend the curled edges of every roll flush against the soil, which prevents the checkerboard of brown seams you see on lots of new lawns.
- Fresh, local sod: All of our sod comes from Cloverdale Nursery, which harvests fresh daily, so the sod going into your yard was cut that morning.
- Two follow-up visits: We come back at around five days to check coverage and moisture and adjust watering, and again at fourteen days to confirm the roots have taken hold and set your timer back to a normal routine. On winter installs, the visits check rooting and watering.
- Watering that fits the season: Summer takes far more water, spring and fall less, and winter much less. We set you up for the season your sod goes in.
Added When Your Yard Needs It
- Old sod or rock removal
- Topsoil: Much of the valley has thin or poor topsoil with clay underneath. We assess your soil during the quote and only include topsoil when it’s genuinely necessary.
- Debris haul-off
- Sprinkler system design & installation: No sprinklers in the backyard yet? We design and install custom irrigation systems built for efficiency and coverage, quoted separately. Learn more about our irrigation services.
Two Sod Varieties
We install a Kentucky Bluegrass/Perennial Rye mix, our most popular option and the deep, lush green lawn most Treasure Valley homeowners are after, and a Tall Turf Lawn Fescue for yards where heat tolerance and durability come first. We’ll help you choose when we put together your quote. Read more in our guide to sod installation in Boise.
April Through October, and Through Mild Winters
Our typical sod season runs roughly April through October, and mild winters extend it. Last winter was mild enough that many Treasure Valley landscapers kept laying sod right through it. We watch the weather and schedule your install on the right days. If the ground’s frozen, we wait for a thaw. You don’t have to figure that out; we do. Winter sod roots in as the soil warms, so your lawn is in place and ready for spring. Winter watering is an easy routine: a hose and sprinkler from your outdoor faucet, moved around the yard on mild days, and we can set up a battery-operated hose timer. What Will It Cost?
Every yard is different. Yard size, what’s there now, grading, topsoil, sprinklers, access and haul-off all affect the price. We don’t publish a price per square foot, because a per-foot number can mislead you in either direction. How Long Does It Take?
Labor on a sod installation typically spans two to five days, depending on the size of the project and the amount of prep work involved. In spring and fall, most lawns are ready for normal activity and their first mow at around two weeks, and very early spring installs may take closer to three. Sod laid over the winter roots in as the soil warms and is ready for spring. Curious what’s normal along the way? Read why new sod turns brown and when to worry. When your lawn is ready for its first mow, our weekly lawn maintenance is available in Boise, Eagle, Garden City, Meridian and Kuna.
