Can You Lay Sod in Winter in the Treasure Valley? Yes — Here’s When

Yes, Sod Can Go In This Winter

In the Treasure Valley, sod can go in during winter whenever the ground isn’t frozen. Our typical sod season runs roughly April through October, and mild winters extend it. University extension turf experts agree: cool-season sod, the kind of grass used on Boise-area lawns, can be installed almost any time of year the soil isn’t frozen.

So if you just moved into a new build in Boise, Eagle, Garden City, Meridian or Kuna, and your builder sodded the front yard and left the backyard as bare dirt, you don’t have to stare at mud until spring.

Ready for Spring: The Best Reason to Sod This Winter

Sod laid over the winter roots in as the soil warms up. Cool-season grass roots do some of their strongest growing in early spring, so a winter-installed lawn is already in place when spring arrives and your family actually wants to be out on it. No waiting for a spring install date, and no mud season in the backyard.

Backyard graded and prepped for new sod in Boise

A lot of new-build backyards start right here, as bare dirt. We clear out weeds and debris, then cultivate and level the soil so the sod has a clean, even surface to root into.

Is It Too Cold to Lay Sod? Let Us Worry About That

We watch the weather and schedule your install on the right days. If the ground’s frozen, we wait for a thaw. You don’t have to figure that out; we do.

Last winter was mild enough that many Treasure Valley landscapers kept laying sod right through it.

How Winter Sod Roots

Sod is mature grass with part of its root system already in place. In cold soil, roots grow more slowly, then take off as the soil warms in spring.

To check, give the sod a gentle tug. When it resists, it’s rooting in. Keep traffic light until it’s rooted. Our follow-up visits at around five and fourteen days check rooting and watering for you.

Alive & Green crew installing sod in a Boise backyard

Next, our crew lays fresh sod from Cloverdale Nursery, cut that morning, and mends every edge flush against the soil. Once it’s down, we water it in with a thorough soaking.

Your Winter Watering Routine

Watering changes with the season. Summer takes far more water, spring and fall less, and winter much less, because cool weather means new sod dries out far more slowly. Here’s the whole winter routine:

  • We water it in with a thorough soaking at installation.
  • On mild days, water at midday with a hose and sprinkler from your outdoor faucet (hose bib). We can set up a battery-operated hose timer if you’d like.
  • Move the sprinkler so every part of the lawn gets water, edges and corners included.
  • Check the soil. Lift a corner of the sod; the soil underneath should be moist, not soggy.
  • Before a freezing night, unhook the hose and timer and drain them.

That’s it. Your sprinkler system can stay shut off for the season. Colorado State University Extension says that in an especially dry winter, this may mean watering every 2–3 weeks.
