If you’re thinking about sod installation and the first thing you want to know is what it’s going to cost, you’re not alone. It’s the most common question we hear, and it’s a completely reasonable one to ask before committing to a project. The honest answer is that sod installation pricing varies — sometimes significantly — based on a handful of factors that are specific to your yard and your situation.
This post walks through everything that affects the cost of a sod installation in the Boise area so you know exactly what you’re paying for and why. We don’t publish prices online, and we’ll explain why that’s actually in your best interest — but by the end of this post you’ll have a clear picture of what goes into a quote and what to expect when you reach out.

Why Sod Installation Prices Vary
Unlike buying a product off a shelf, sod installation is a service that gets priced based on the specific conditions of your property. Two neighbors on the same street with the same size backyard can have meaningfully different quotes depending on what’s in their yards right now. Here are the factors that matter most.
Square Footage
This is the most straightforward factor. Larger lawns require more sod, more labor, and more time. That said, square footage alone doesn’t tell the whole story — a large, open rectangular backyard is a very different job than a smaller yard with complex shapes, tight corners, obstacles, and multiple separate areas to cover.
What’s There Before We Start
The condition of your yard before installation has a significant impact on the work involved. There are three common starting points we see in the Treasure Valley:
- Bare dirt on a new construction home. Many Treasure Valley homebuilders install front yard sod as part of the home package but leave the backyard unfinished to reduce the purchase price. A bare backyard on a new construction home is often the most straightforward starting point — there’s nothing to remove, just soil preparation and installation.
- An existing lawn being replaced. If you have an older lawn you want to start over, or dead and patchy grass that’s beyond saving, we need to remove that vegetation before we can prep the soil and lay new sod. The amount of existing growth, weeds, and debris affects how much work this step involves.
- A specific area being restored. Many clients need sod in a defined area where something used to be — a tree that was removed, a fence or wall that came down, a play structure that left a bare patch. These projects are often smaller and more targeted, but can involve irregular shapes that require careful fitting.
Soil Preparation
Soil quality throughout the Treasure Valley tends to be a challenge. Much of the valley has thin or poor topsoil with clay underneath, which can restrict drainage and make it harder for roots to establish. Where existing soil conditions aren’t suitable for sod, we bring in fresh topsoil and work it into the ground before installation.
Not every yard needs added topsoil — we assess this during the quoting process and only include it when it’s genuinely necessary. When it is needed, it affects the cost of the project. It also makes a real difference in how well your lawn establishes and how it performs for years to come, so it’s not a step we skip to lower a number.
For smaller projects we prepare the soil by hand. For larger lawns we bring in a cultivator, which removes existing vegetation and works the soil simultaneously, breaking up compaction and creating a clean, level surface for the sod.
The Sod Itself
All of our sod comes from Cloverdale Nursery, a Boise institution that has been growing turf in the Treasure Valley for over 50 years. Because it’s grown locally, it’s already acclimated to our soil, our water, and our climate. Cloverdale harvests fresh daily, which means the sod going into your yard was cut that morning — not sitting in a warehouse or on a truck since last week.
We install two varieties: a Kentucky Bluegrass/Perennial Rye mix, which is our most popular option and produces the deep, lush green lawn most Treasure Valley homeowners are after, and a Tall Turf Lawn Fescue for situations where heat tolerance and durability are the priority. We’ll talk through which variety makes sense for your yard when we come out for a quote.
Labor and Installation Technique
Not all sod installations are equal, and labor is where the real difference between a good result and a disappointing one gets made. Our installation process includes a step called mending — manually pressing and working the curled edges of each sod roll flush against the soil as we lay it. It takes more time than simply rolling sod out and moving on, but it prevents the checkerboard pattern of dead seams that shows up about a week after installations where this step is skipped.
We also adjust every sprinkler head during installation to make sure it ends up at the correct depth once the sod is laid on top — close enough to the surface to deliver water effectively, recessed enough that it’s not a hazard for people using the lawn.
Labor on a sod installation typically spans two to five days depending on the size of the project and the amount of prep work involved. A large backyard with significant debris and existing vegetation takes longer than a clean, open space ready to receive sod.
Post-Installation Service
Our sod installations include two follow-up visits that are built into the job, not billed separately. We return at around five days to inspect coverage, check moisture levels, adjust the watering schedule if needed, and hand water any areas where sprinkler coverage is falling short. We come back again at fourteen days to confirm the roots have established, dial the sprinkler timer back to a normal routine, and give the lawn a final assessment before considering the job complete.
These visits are part of what you’re getting when you hire Alive & Green — not an add-on, not an upsell. You can read more about what we look for at each visit in our post on why new sod turns brown and when to worry.
Why We Don’t Publish Prices Online
We get this question often, and it’s worth being straightforward about. A published price per square foot sounds helpful, but it can actually mislead you in either direction — making a project sound cheaper than it will be if your yard needs significant prep work, or more expensive than necessary if your yard is in great shape and ready to go. A number on a website can’t account for your soil, your existing vegetation, your irrigation system, or the specific shape and conditions of your property.
What we can do is come out, take a look, and give you a real quote based on what’s actually in front of us. There are no surprises in our quotes — if topsoil is needed, it’s in the quote. If there’s significant debris removal involved, it’s in the quote. You know exactly what you’re getting before any work begins.
